Odysseus Returns from Troy - Storytelling Workshop
Leaving Troy in flames, Odysseus, 'man of many wiles' and cunning inventor of the wooden horse, sets sail for home in triumph. He left Ithaca ten years before, but many adventures await him and ten more years will pass before he sees his wife and son again.
Odysseus offends the Gods and on his long journey home he is attacked by cannibal giants, confronts the Cyclops and is detained by a powerful witch who turns his hapless crew into swine. Worse awaits him though, as he is forced to descend to the Land of the Dead. Yet even when kindly seafarers take him home, Odysseus' troubles are not over.
Greedy chieftains have occupied his house and want to marry the lovely Penelope, his faithful wife. These challenges and the ways in which Odysseus rises up to meet them are all
part of "The Odyssey",probably the greatest story ever told.
Workshop Structure
This one day workshop is ideal for Key Stage Two audiences, but can also be offered in a form suitable for years 7 and 8.
The voyage taken by Odysseus is used as a pathway to greater understanding of narrative structure through drama and storytelling. Props and movement contribute to the lively and stimulating character of the day.
The narrative element itself lasts up to two hours and is presented in brief
sections, followed by enjoyable games and exercises designed to meet
speaking and listening objectives.
